In many ways it demonstrates what would happen in an ice age, in which ice and glaciers move as though they were alive.
This phenomenon is being caused by sheets of ice formed by Lake Mille Lacs in Minnesota. In addition to ice being pushed to shore from the lake, the shallower water of the shore lines freeze quickly in the dry, cold air and then strong winds along with incoming waves push it toward shore and out onto land. The waves continue to push the new ice formations which, in turn, push the older ones further on land in a continuing cycle.
So far, no serious damages have been reported.
